Who We Are

The Door County Seed Library is a volunteer-run seed lending and garden education program that offers free open-pollinated vegetable, herb, flower, and native seeds that members can ‘borrow’ to plant and grow in their home gardens. We offer our seeds through Door County Library branches and at special events.

Our goals are to help people become successful gardeners and seed savers, increase our sustainability and capacity to grow wholesome food, and foster a culture of sharing.

We are a collaborative project of the Door County Library, Door County Master Gardeners Association, The Community’s Garden, Extension Door County, and Wild Ones of the Door Peninsula. And volunteers like you!

What is a seed library?

A seed library is an institution that facilitates the sharing of seeds within a community and encourages putting the “power of seed” back into the hands of people. It works much the same as a traditional library, but with seeds instead of books. People ‘check out’ free seeds, grow them, maybe let some plants go to seed, then save some of those seeds to plant next year or share with other gardeners.

What seeds are available?

Due to our reliance on seed donations, our seed inventory varies from year to year and even through the course of a growing season. We always strive to offer a variety of open-pollinated vegetable, herb, flower, and native seeds.

How does it work?

1

If you're not already a member...

Fill out an online membership form on the Door County Seed Library website (you only need to do this once).

2

Go to a participating Library branch

Starting around the third week of March, you can go to one of the participating library branches to get your seeds: Bailey Harbor, Sister Bay, Egg Harbor, Sturgeon Bay, and Forestville Libraries.

3

Peruse the seeds

Peruse the seed packet inventory and select your desired seeds. (We ask that you only take the seeds that you will plant in your personal garden.)

4

Plant your seeds in your garden!

Grow a bounty of vegetables and flowers and share with your
friends and neighbors!
