Are you interested in becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer?
Training and certification for new Master Gardener Volunteers is a three-step process and is now offered online by UW-Extension through Zoom and the university’s Canvas platform, giving candidates the flexibility to complete the course on their own schedules and from any location.
Step 1: The core course, Foundations in Gardening, teaches research-based methods to grow plants and manage pests. Candidates move at their own pace through 12+ modules with online videos, readings, activities and scheduled live webinars, as well as optional labs. UW-Extension experts present videos and Q&A sessions to teach decision making strategies and gardening resources.
Early Bird Registration for the Fall 2023 Foundations in Gardening class is from July 17 through August 14, 2023. The course runs from September 10 through December 9, 2023.
For more information, please complete the Master Gardener Interest Form below. Or call the local Extension office at 920-746-2260 to let them know that you are interested in the course, and they will answer your questions and help with registration. Door County Master Gardeners will then be happy to assist you with any questions or concerns as you progress through the course.
Step 2: After completion of the Foundations in Gardening course, candidates wishing to become Wisconsin Extension Master Gardeners must take a second course called Master Gardener Onboarding to become certified as a Master Gardener Volunteer. This online course serves as an orientation to the Master Gardener Program, provides a horticulture certification exam, and sets up access to computer platforms used in the program. Registration for the 2024 Onboarding course will begin in late 2023.
Step 3: Once certified, we encourage Master Gardener Volunteers to join Door County Master Gardeners Association (DCMGA). Our local organization offers a multitude of continuing education programs, volunteer opportunities, and social events with like-minded gardeners in Door County. Join us in “The Garden Door” (our education demonstration garden open to the public), take in our educational programs presented by gardening experts, or participate in volunteer programs at other community organizations around the county.
