How can you become a Master Gardener Volunteer?
A link to the application for Master Gardener training is located at the bottom of this web page.
To become a certified Master Gardener Volunteer, you have to complete a Level 1 Master Gardener Training Program . Door County Master Gardener Association (DCMGA) requires you to put in 36 hours of education and 24 hours of volunteer time as well as pass an open book exam at the end of the program. For each year following that you will need to have 10 hours of education and 24 hours of volunteer time to remain a certified Master Gardener Volunteer in good standing.
It begins with the application process. You need to download an application from our website or pick up the paperwork at the Door County UW Extension Office, County Government Center, 421 Nebraska Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235. Phone: 920-746-2260 You will also return the paperwork to the UW Extension Office. While you can submit the paperwork anytime during the year, we only process them once a year, at the end of November. Acceptance in the class is based on the background check through the UW Extension system and the order in which we receive your application. Classes are limited to 12 participants each year. The applications received after the class is filled will be first on the list the following year.
A background check is a UW requirement for any group who has contact with the more vulnerable members of society. Because we have a youth program we need to follow the rules. It is handled very professionally and confidentially by UW personnel.
We usually have a Training Class every winter. It runs from the first Wednesday in January through the last Wednesday in March. Our program is not a college botany course. You will receive resource manuals with tons of botanical and technical information. The material will be discussed as you make your way through the class. The meat of our program consists of presentations and interactive programs by other Master Gardener Volunteers as well as knowledgeable professional people in many aspects of horticulture. Class participation, some of which will be hands-on , and dialogue is encouraged.
How do you manage to accumulate the required hours? We provide enough classes/programs within the training program and public Education programs to cover the 36 hours of education. For the volunteer time, we encourage students to get involved in The Garden Door which is the garden planted and maintained by the Door Country Master Gardener Volunteers. The Garden Door is the educational/botanical garden housed at the UW Peninsular Agricultural Research Station in Sturgeon Bay. Master Gardener Volunteers also assist with answering horticulture-related questions that come into the Extension Door County office. There are also several Community Projects where members can earn their hours. We encourage the students to check out any and all committees and the work they do. We also usually have a class project…sometimes involving the Garden Door.
The class fee is $125 per person. Payment is due on the first night of class. Do NOT send the fee with the application. It covers the cost of the resource materials, the background check fee, local and state membership fees for the year of the class, and the cost of the name badge you’ll be given at the end of the program.
How do I transfer my membership from another Master Gardener Chapter?
If you are currently a Wisconsin certified MGV in good standing you need only pay the membership fee for the local chapter and put in the required annual volunteer and education time. If you are currently certified by another state and are in good standing, you will need to purchase the Wisconsin training materials as well as put in the required time and pay the membership dues for both state and local. Regardless of where you received your original certification, if you’ve been inactive for more than 5 years, you will have to take the course over in order to be re-certified.
Below is the application for the Master Gardener Training. Applications are due by 4:30 pm the last Thursday of November. Applications can be sent to Door County UW-Extension, Door County Government Center, 421 Nebraska Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 or emailed to [email protected]. Applications are accepted on a first-come basis.
