Summer Safaris
NOTE: The Summer Safari events are open only to Door County Master Gardener members and their guests.

The Education Committee has put together a series of Fun Summer Safaris. These excursions, for DCMGA members and a significant other, are designed to give all of us opportunities to visit or revisit some interesting gardens or properties that are taken care of by other DCMGA volunteers. All of the Safaris will count for continuing education (CE) hours!!!!  And....many of the safaris will have an optional picnic and socializing component.

Spring Wildflower Tour and Tailgate Lunch
Sponsored by the DCMGA Education Committee
Thursday, May 19th 2022, at 10 am (Rain date Monday, May 23)

We will tour the Ridges’ Logan Creek property, a parcel of 170 acres located in the town of Jacksonport on the north end of Clark Lake. This beautiful parcel has over 3,000 feet of shoreline on Clark Lake and an additional 1,500 feet along Logan Creek. We’ll observe a variety of habitats, including upland hardwood forest and lowland cedar-hemlock forest, which are home to many breeding birds. Mature beech, hemlock and sugar maple trees are found throughout the property. Spring wildflowers are outstanding on this site, with hepatica, spring beauty, trilliums, and trout lilies putting on a show from mid-April to the end of May.  We will also look for ramps, sedges, anemone, toothwort, bellflowers, horsetails, beechbark disease, club mosses, and marsh marigold.
The walk will take approximately two hours (Lower and Upper Loop and Lake Overlook, approx.  1.6 mi.).  Bring your favorite field guide, bug spray, a hat, a water bottle, and lunch.  After the walk, we will gather in the parking lot to socialize while we eat lunch.
Master Gardeners who are Ridges members hike free.  Non-members please bring $5 per person to put in the fee collection tube at the trailhead.  You are welcome to bring a guest!
Driving directions:
From Hwy 57, turn east on Loritz Road and travel 0.1 mile to the parking lot at 5724 Loritz Road.  Loritz Road is located south of Jacksonport, just south of Mr. G’s Supper Club.

Tour of Peninsular Agricultural Research Station
Sponsored by the DCMGA Education Committee
Tuesday, May 24th at 6:00 pm at PARS

Are you curious about the Peninsular Agricultural Research Station (PARS) ?  Well, come one, come all!  Master Gardener Volunteers and a significant other are invited to join us on May 24th at 6:00PM at PARS.  Becky Wiepz, Station Superintendent, will provide a tour of the station.  Depending upon weather and the number of people that RSVP, Becky will give a short talk about the station and the efforts to support agricultural research and outreach in the community and throughout the state. We will then take a wagon ride of the station grounds to get a better understanding of the scope of the operations.  Or, if there is a group of less than 40, Becky will discuss the operations as she is touring us through the station property.

Please RSVP to Sue Kunz at suekunz18@gmail.com by May 18th.

TOUR OF ADRC RAISED BED GARDENS
AND OPTIONAL LUNCH
REGISTRATION REQUESTED

Thursday June 16th – 10:00
ADRC/Community Center
916 North 14th Avenue

Join Master Gardener, Helen Bacon, and Activity/Volunteer Coordinator of the ADRC/Community Center, Nicki Scharrig, in a presentation and tour of the vegetable raised beds and newly planted fruit trees at the Adult and Disability Resource Center, (ADRC), in Sturgeon Bay. Helen and Nicki have worked with UW Extension to secure a number of grants to help them purchase raised beds, a shed and equipment for the garden.

Find out what is planted, how it is distributed and how this garden has inspired additional gardens and gardening ideas at other locations in the city. We welcome volunteers and we provide education and instruction on how to garden as well as nutrition and recipe ideas. Your ideas, labor and input are welcome!

After our tour, if you would like to stay and visit, we can meet in the dining room for a lunch of Chicken Parmesan. The cost is a recommended donation of $5.00 if you are 60 or older. The price for those younger is $12.00. We would love to have you join us for conversation and garden “talk”.

For more information and to register, please email Helen Bacon at hlbacon55@hotmail.com before Monday, June 13th. Please let me know if you will be planning on staying for lunch!   Thanks Helen
